Honor Robot Phone: Features, Robotic Gimbal Camera, Specifications and More

The Honor Robot Phone is one of the most unusual smartphones to appear in recent times. Its main attraction is a robotic gimbal camera that can move outside the phone and rotate in different directions.

Smartphone manufacturers have experimented with unusual designs before. Pop-up cameras, rotating cameras and sliding mechanisms were once popular, but unique designs like these have become less common in recent years.

This Honor smartphone brings back that experimental approach with a moving camera system. The robotic gimbal is designed to provide flexible camera angles, face tracking and improved video stabilization.

Honor Robot Phone Robotic Gimbal Camera

The biggest highlight of the Honor Robot Phone is its motorized gimbal camera.

The camera is accessed using a slider. After opening the mechanism, users can control the camera through the camera application.

Additional controls appear when gimbal mode is activated. These controls work similarly to a joystick and allow users to move the camera in different directions.

The camera can move:

• Left and right
• Up and down
• Towards the front
• Towards the user for selfie recording

The movement range is limited by the physical design of the mechanism, but it provides considerably more flexibility than a conventional fixed smartphone camera.

Camera Specifications

According to the source, the device features a multi-camera setup.

The camera system includes:

• 200MP main gimbal camera
• 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera
• 200MP periscope camera
• 2.7x optical zoom
• Up to 200x digital zoom

When the robotic camera is extended, the camera interface focuses on that system.

The ultra-wide and periscope cameras can also be accessed when the gimbal camera returns to its normal position.

How the Robotic Camera Works

The gimbal camera can be controlled directly through the camera application.

A joystick-style control allows users to move the camera and change the shooting angle without physically rotating the entire phone.

Users can also move the camera towards themselves. This allows the main camera hardware to be used for selfie videos.

This can be useful for:

• Vlogging
• Selfie videos
• Walking videos
• Content creation
• Recording moving subjects

Using the rear camera for selfies can be particularly useful because the main camera system may offer better hardware than a conventional front-facing camera.

Face Tracking Feature

The robotic camera can detect and follow a person’s face.

After selecting a face on the screen, the camera can attempt to follow the subject as they move.

This feature may be useful for vloggers and content creators who want to remain in the frame while recording.

However, the tracking range is limited. The camera cannot continue rotating endlessly in every direction.

Different Gimbal Modes

The smartphone includes several modes that change how the camera responds to movement.

These modes include:

• Default Mode
• Tilt Mode
• FPV Mode
• FPV Vertical Mode
• Super Steady Mode

Default Mode

In the default mode, the gimbal follows the movement of the phone.

Tilt Mode

Tilt Mode changes how the camera reacts to movement. The system can keep certain movements more controlled while continuing to follow movement in other directions.

FPV Mode

FPV Mode allows the camera to follow the rotation and movement of the smartphone more freely.

FPV Vertical Mode

This mode is designed for vertical shooting and can be useful when recording activities or subjects from different angles.

Super Steady Mode

Super Steady Mode focuses on keeping the camera stable.

Even when the smartphone is moved, the camera attempts to maintain a more stable view.

This physical stabilization system is one of the most interesting aspects of the device.

Video Recording Features

The phone supports several video recording options.

According to the source, the available features include:

• 4K video recording
• 4K 60fps recording
• Up to 4K 120fps recording
• Portrait video
• Vertical video recording
• 2.8K 60fps recording in certain gimbal situations
• Log video recording

The available resolution can change depending on the position of the camera.

When the sensor changes orientation, the image may be cropped, which can affect the maximum available video resolution.

ARRI Cinema Features

The smartphone also includes ARRI Cinema-related filters and video features.

Users can access different filters and previews while recording videos.

These features provide additional creative options for users who want more control over the appearance of their footage.

Main Camera for Selfie Videos

One of the most interesting features of the Honor Robot Phone is that its gimbal camera can rotate towards the user.

This allows the main camera to work as a selfie camera.

Instead of depending only on a traditional front-facing camera, users can record selfie videos using the rear camera hardware.

This can be useful for:

• Vloggers
• Content creators
• Selfie video recording
• Walking videos
• Personal video recording

AI and Music Interaction

The device also includes some AI-based interactive features.

When music is played, the robotic camera can react with movements and animations.

Certain voice commands can also be used to interact with the device.

According to the source, the system may not respond perfectly every time. Some commands work successfully, while others may occasionally fail to produce the expected response.

The music interaction appears to be an additional entertainment feature rather than a primary camera function.

Video Stabilization Performance

Video stabilization is one of the strongest features of this smartphone.

Traditional smartphones generally depend on:

• Optical Image Stabilization (OIS)
• Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS)

This device uses a physical gimbal-style mechanism.

Because the camera can physically move, it can provide a different type of stabilization compared with conventional smartphone cameras.

According to the source, stabilization while walking and running is particularly impressive.

The physical movement of the camera helps keep the video stable even when the smartphone itself is moving.

Camera Quality

The camera can produce good photos and videos in good lighting conditions.

Its biggest strength appears to be stabilization rather than low-light image processing.

In daylight, the device can capture good results. However, according to the source, video and photo quality may struggle more in lower lighting conditions when compared with some other flagship smartphones.

Portrait images may also apply noticeable skin smoothing and beautification effects.

For this reason, users looking primarily for the best low-light camera processing may want to compare it with other flagship devices.

What Happens If the Phone Falls?

A moving camera mechanism naturally raises questions about durability.

Older smartphones with pop-up cameras could retract their cameras after detecting a fall.

The robotic gimbal mechanism works differently.

According to the source, the camera may not have enough time to return inside the device if the phone suddenly falls.

Dropping the phone while the camera is extended could therefore increase the risk of damage.

Users would need to handle the moving camera system carefully.

Dust and Durability Concerns

The robotic design also creates some concerns regarding dust and long-term durability.

Dust could potentially enter the areas around the moving mechanism.

Cleaning the visible camera lens is straightforward, but cleaning dust from inside the moving parts may be more difficult.
